Matthew PILLSBURY
“An American in the City of Light”
on Thursday April 16, 2009, from 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. at
The French Institute Alliance Française,
22 East 60th Street New York, 10022.
Over the course of 15 images, Pillsbury showcases a variety of Parisian sites, many of them iconic, some of them commonplace. His subjects range from a service at La Sainte Chapelle, to the haunting Père Lachaise cemetery, to the grand Bon Marché department store. His style succeeds in trumping our assumptions about the famed city and delivers surprising results. Pillsbury’s photos address the themes of movement, transience, and the urban space. Exclusively using natural light, each shot requires a very long exposure time, taking a few minutes to a few hours to complete. The result is fleeting forms, juxtaposing the ephemeral human experience with the durable stonework of Paris. Pillsbury succeeds in creating a dialogue between time and space and demonstrating the overarching human experience within these realms
